President’s Report: Laurie Vicario: A big welcome to Leslie Flowers, Deb Sigmon and Clare Barnard for attending the meeting. Laure thanked everyone who has donated their time for all of the activities we cover for the teachers of Connecticut. IMPORTANT: We need a new TREASURER as soon as possible. New signature cards and learning the ropes from Joanne are the first part of the job.

CAEA Treasurer's Report: Joanne Barry Dutro – Total income from January 1, 2008 through March 11, 2008 was $7,882.56. Expenses for the same time period were $8,477.91. This leaves us with a balance of $(-595.35).

The insurance has been paid for the Lyme Academy Retreat. We will leave $50.00 in the First National Bank account for the months of March through September and use the rest where needed. Corresponding Secretary: Cindy Rehm

Fall Conference: October 27, 2008 Andrea has contacted the Holiday Inn in Waterbury where we previously have had our Fall Conferences. The hotel is off of Interstate 84 at exit 26. They have 11 breakout rooms depending on where we have the exhibitors. Fee is $3000.00, non-taxable as we are a non-profit organization. The hotel does not charge for the ballroom where our main speaker/dinner is held. All we pay for is the food. We will set aside a block of 10 room at $99 for those who want to stay the night before. There will be a continental Breakfast and lunch will be $20.00. Desert will be after the breakout sessions where the raffle prizes will be drawn. We will need a listing of all AV equipment that will be needed. We will ask presenters to supply their own equipment if possible. We will pay for the presenter’s lunch.

Needed is a theme for the conference and a speaker. Do we want and artist? Educator? Museum person? If you come up with an idea for either, please contact Andrea or Laurie.

STUDENT SUPPORT:
YAC Chris: Set up date is Saturday March 1, 2008 at 1pm. at the Hartford Insurance Company on Route 10 in Simsbury. The reception is March 15, 2008 from 2-4pm. Striking of the show is March 22, 2008 at 10 am. Many assisted at the hanging on March 1. Participation by teachers and the number of pieces hung was up from last year. Chris is looking into the possibility of hanging next year’s show in the Legislative Office Building tunnels. The lower tunnel would be March 2-17, 2009 while the upper tunnel would be March 18-30, 2009. The tunnels have rod hangers. Would there be enough hangers to hang all of the presently received work? Would we have to limit the piece to one per teacher? Laurie and Chris will visit to see the possibilities. We will place a reservation on the tunnels and then decide later. The Hartford Insurance Company will be notified either way.

Scholastics: Chip and Andrea –. We took in $12,446.83 and spent $15,206.38. This leaves us in the hole by $2759.55. With a buffer in the savings account of $4,300.00 we can cover the deficit. How long this will go on is to be determined. The speaker for the Awards Ceremony at Lincoln Theater was Bill Thomson, one of the teachers of Illustration at the Hartford Art School. His presentation of how he decides on an illustration helped to strengthen art teachers’ comments on having students create many ideas and doing several compositions before deciding on a final one. Chip and Andrea are waiting for more information from Nationals on what is going to be the plan for next year. Our concerns of money will be addressed as soon as they hear from Nationals. What will happen to Scholastics for next year will be one our retreat items. Right now our biggest expenses are the SAA fee to National, postage, printing and office supplies/secretary.

Scholastics will be one of the major break-out sessions at the Spring Retreat to be held at the Lyme Academe.

Scholastics treasurer: Eileen –

GRANT– IMPORTANT: Anything written for Scholastics printings has to have “with thanks to the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, Tourism, and Culture”. Also, copies of these letters and printings have to be sent with the Grant Application.

Advocacy: Paul:
Scott Shuler: Next year high schools in Hartford will not have art or music at their schools. There is a state law that says all high schools must have art and music. The only way for this concern to be addressed is for a parent of one of the students in the Hartford, or any other town, to contact the state/town and complain. Scott posted the information recently on his emails to all of the teachers whom he has email addresses for.

Scott met with Commissioner McQuillan with the other art’s representatives concerning 2 credits in the arts to graduate. CMEA president wants 2 credits in Music.

The Summer Arts Institute will work in conjunction with Lyme Academy where the institute will be held. A grant was received for 14 openings at the Institute to be fully paid. They all have been accounted for. Any art educator can pay $400.00 and take the courses at Lyme Academy. You will get college credit or CEU’S. Right now the Institute will be for Connecticut teachers. In future years it will be open to all nationwide. The Music section of the Summer Institute will be held in Fairfield while the History sections will be held at the Florence Griswold Museum. The Institutes will focus on curriculum.

Last year we voted to spend $50.00 for 10 CAEA teachers to attend. There were only 3 who took us up on the offer.

We, as art teachers, are designing our own assessment requirements. We are trying to be pro-active for the arts. A Statewide Arts Assessment will be piloted in late April.

Awards: Janice May- The Awards Ceremony will be held on April 10, 2008 at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Registration forms will be posted on the website. Laurie will send the forms by email to all of the board members. This year we had a strong group of applicants. The following are the winners for 2008.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING:

Membership: Michelle –. We are at 419 members. Michelle received a listing of all first year art teachers from the State Department. Of the 53 new teachers, 7 are now members of CAEA. She will send out a welcome letter to all of the 53 new teachers with information on joining CAEA.

Activities:
Museum: Dawn Salerno. Dawn will now be at the Mystic Art Museum. She would like to stay connected to CAEA. You can reach her at dawn.salerno@mysticarts.org.
Dawn starts this week and now the Wadsworth is looking for someone to replace her. She met with other Museum Educators, not just art educators, to discuss what the museums can do for teachers in the state.

Social: Shelia Creed, Shelia is planning a trip to the Pequot Museum at Foxwoods the week after the Awards Dinner. Should we have 2 events so close to each other? It would be Spring Vacation for most of the state’s schools. Will there be enough interest at this late date? She will try it out and get feedback from those who do attend. Some could carpool. There may be a bus from Hartford and one from New Haven if there is enough interest. She hopes to get attendees from those who signed up at the Fall Conference. She has their names and addresses and will contact them with the information.

Old Business:

Spring Retreat – Lyme Academy . Andrea has contacted the Lyme Academy for the retreat. As of today she has May 3, 2008 as the date. However, since Chip said this was not a good time for him because of the National Scholastic situation the retreat may be on May 17, 2008. More information will be sent via email to the board members on the exact date. Deb Sigmon, who attended our CAEA meeting today, will give a tour of the gallery and school. We will look for the same caterer that we had on a previous occasion. Shelia will contact MJ to get the information on the caterer or other food establishments in the area.
Don’t forget to get door prizes for the raffle. Give the address of the establishment to Cindy Rehm so she can thank them for the donation.

New Business:

National Convention: The NAEA Conference will be in New Orleans. Andrea and Laurie will split up the days attending the Delegates Assembly. Paul has set up an itinerary on what to do and the best places to eat. Friday night is Connecticut Night. Information on the Connecticut party will be set up on a board that is usually where the teachers register or in the main lobby of the hotel. If you know of someone who is going, have them Laurie’s email so she can keep them informed. Her email is lvicario@Cheshire.k12.ct.us.

Cindy Parsons will be recognized at the NAEA Eastern Luncheon as the 2008 Eastern Region Secondary Art Educator Award recipient. Congratulations to Cindy from all of the Connecticut teachers.

Respectfully submitted,

Patricia DiCosimo
