Dear Connecticut Art Educators:
Please accept this invitation to participate in the Connecticut Scholastic
Art Awards Program. This is a non-profit, all volunteer activity which is
sponsored by the Connecticut Art Education Association - your professional
art educators organization.
Scholastic Art Awards of Connecticut is an affiliate of The Alliance For Young
Artists & Writers. This program recognizes the work of talented young
artists in Grades 7 to 12. Student artwork is juried by professional artists
and university art faculty and is selected on merit for inclusion in a state-wide
art exhibition held at the University of Hartford Art School. Beyond the honor
of being selected for this high quality exhibit, students may be awarded gold
or silver keys and honorable mention places in each of 16 media categories.
The winners of the gold key award will have their artwork submitted as a digital
image to the National Level Scholastic Art Awards for jury at the close of
the exhibit. A national jury will choose works for exhibit in the National
Show held in June, 2008. Connecticut winners and their teachers will be notified
by mailed invitation to the Connecticut Regional Awards Celebration in January.
Additionally, our Connecticut winners may be chosen to receive these special
state level awards:
American Visions Award for Connecticut (5).
The Hartford Art School Scholarships (renewable 4 years).
University of Connecticut & Fine Arts Scholarship (s).
The Lyme Academy of Fine Arts Tuition Scholarships.
Central Connecticut State University Scholarships.
Numerous cash and product awards in media categories.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ART: 1. ENTRY FORM PREPARATION: Complete the entire Entry Form, upper and lower portions. Entry Form must have the students' art teacher's original signature and must have a title or description. Upper portion of Entry Form must be: attached to back of mounted flat works; secured to unmounted works; mounted on cardboard and secured to small 3-D works. 2. PREVIOUS ENTRIES: Except in portfolios, works must not be previous entries. Previous entries in portfolios must be clearly marked as such on the Portfolio Entry Form (Portfolio Inventory Section). 3. COLLABORATIVE WORKS: Except in portfolios, students may enter collaborative works. Awards will be divided equally among the students. A complete Entry Form must be submitted for each student. 4. MOUNTING: 2-D works must be mounted to reinforce back. Flush or stretch mounting is acceptable. Use black or white mats only, if matted. No frames, glass, plexiglass, or wood strips. 5. COMBINED MATERIALS: Flat-surface works with combined materials, such as an ink drawing with a watercolor wash, must be entered into the category of the dominant medium. These works will not be considered Mixed Media, as the surface plane is flat and not interrupted. 6. STUDENT WORK: All work must be done by the students, except for photography where students may not have developed, processed or enlarged photos themselves. PACKING/SHIPPING 1. All works from one school should be sent together, if possible, with the exception of 3-D works. Include an inventory list in the first box of entries. 2. Pack three-dimensional works carefully in separate cartons to avoid breakage. All flat works must be covered with acetate or cellophane, to help avoid damage from handling. 3. Address package as indicated in materials. Be sure to include your school's return address. If you would like acknowledgement of receipt, enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard. 4. Deliver entries in person, send by freight service prepaid, or by Parcel Post (if size and weight permit). THE REGIONAL AND NATIONAL SPONSORS ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS, DAMAGE, OR BREAKAGE. In a project of this scope, involving shipping and handling at both regional and national levels, entrants who submit breakable objects should understand that they do so at their own risk. RETURN OF ENTRIES Following Regional Judging: All entries not selected as finalists, including portfolios, will be returned to schools as soon as possible after the regional (preliminary) judging. In some areas teachers may be notified to pick up entries. (See Entry Form cover for your region.) Following National Judging: In Sponsored Regions: Entries not selected as national finalists will be returned to teachers by United Parcel Service or Parcel Post C.O.D. during the months of April and May. Larger packages may be sent by freight service C.O.D. If your school does not accept C.O.D. packages, notify The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, 555 Broadway, New York, NY 10012, (212) 343-6892, so that other arrangements can be made PRIOR to shipping. In Unsponsored Regions: Entries not selected for national judging or for national honors will be sent to teachers prepaid by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards by United Parcel Service in April. If your work is selected for a national award, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards reserve the right to hold your work for up to two years. Works will be returned to students' home address as soon as possible thereafter. ORIGINALITY All entries must be original. If there is any doubt as to the originality of a work, do not submit it. In signing the Entry Form the teacher and student have certified its originality. Any submitted work found to be plagiarized will be disqualified and any awards will be withdrawn. NOTE TO TEACHERS You must review and sign each Entry Form. Be sure that you have reviewed all rules and guidelines for entry with your students. The Scholastic Art Awards which are administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. assume no responsibility when unsafe or toxic materials are used in the preparation of entries. COPYRIGHTS From the time of submission to the national level, all entries are the property of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. All entries selected as national award winners remain the property of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. for two years. At the end of that period, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc. retains non-exclusive publishing rights. The rights to entries not selected as national award winners revert automatically to the artist. Scholastic Inc. does not copyright individual works, on the publications in which they appear. For permission to use an Alliance-owned work in any way, please write to: The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, 555 Broadway, New York, NY 10012. |
